A scientific paper at IEEE ACIT 2022 conference

Researchers from UDG and NCC Montenegro presented a scientific paper at the 2022 International Arab Conference on Information Technology (ACIT). The conference took place at the Al Ain University – Abu Dhabi Campus on November 22-24, 2022. The paper “Overcoming Limitations of Statistical Methods with Artificial Neural Networks” was authored by M. Grebovic, L. Filipovic, I. Katnic, M. Vukotic, and T. Popovic. More information about the conference is available here. The paper is available at IEEE Xplore at the following link.

ABSTRACT – Traditional statistical models as tools for summarizing patterns and regularities in observed data can be used for making predictions. However, statistical prediction models contain small number of important predictors, which means limited informative capability. Also, predictive statistical models that provide some type of pseudo-correct regular statistical patterns, are used without previous understanding of the used data causality. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms as area in Artificial Intelligence (AI) provide the ability to interpret and understand data in more sophisticated way. Artificial Neural Networks as kind of ML methods use non-linear algorithms, considering links and associations between parameters, while statistical use one-step-ahead linear processes to improve only short-term prediction’s accuracy by minimizing cost function. Disregarding that designing an optimal artificial neural network is very complex process, they are considered as potential solution for overcoming main flaws of statistical prediction models. However, they will not automatically improve predictions accuracy, so several artificial neural networks and traditional statistical methods are evaluated and analyzed through accuracy measures for prediction purposes in various fields of applications. Based on gained results, couple of techniques for improving artificial neural networks are proposed to get better accuracy results than statistical predictive methods.

Castiel WP2 Workshop on “Human engagement”

One of our Euro CC members, dr Armin Alibasic got an invitation to speak at the workshop Human Engagement in HPC. Dr Alibasic presented our success stories on how to engage younger students, including high schools, on HPC. Regarding this topic, one of our biggest achievements is creating an Open Mind academy where so far we had over 200 high school students participating in our training on courses such as Analyzing Social Media Trends, Python Video Game Programming, HPC/AI and Machine Learning, Parallel Programming, Hugging Face, and others.

Introducing NCC Montenegro
Discussing the Master program in AI

In addition, he talked about several lectures held at UDG where we invited young researches which gave a very interesting talks on AI/ML and their practical applications. Finally, dr Alibasic concluded by mentioning several conferences organized withing Montenegro, but as well the international events.

Participation in SmAgTech EXPO 2022

The second consecutive virtual online fair “SmAgTech EXPO 2022” on the application of information and communication technologies in agriculture, will be held in the period 23-24/11/2022. The fair is organized within the ERASMUS+ project VIRAL. More than 60 institutions, companies, projects, and programs in the fields of agriculture and ICT will be presented at the fair. Through 20 plenary and section lectures, visitors will be able to hear more about new scientific and practical knowledge in this field. A representative from NCC Montenegro, mr Stevan Cakic, will give a presentation on the use of HPC/AI to develop computer vision solutions for smart poultry farms. How to build Machine Learning collaboratively by Hugging Face

How can you show what a Machine Learning model does once it’s trained?

In this talk, you’re going to learn how to create Machine Learning apps and demos using Streamlit and Gradio, Python libraries for this purpose. Additionally, you’ll see how to share them with the rest of the Open Source ecosystem. Learning to create graphic interfaces for models is extremely useful for sharing with other people interesting them. The lecture will take place on 2 November 2022, 18:30h. Expected duration is 1 hour.
