Short course: 3D Printing, Generative AI and HPC-Enabled Design

This short course introduces participants to the fundamentals of 3D printing, 3D modeling, and AI-assisted design, while demonstrating how Generative AI and HPC infrastructure can accelerate the creation, optimization, and prototyping of complex 3D models.

The course combines hands-on 3D printing exercises, AI-based model generation, and an introduction to HPC-enabled design workflows, enabling participants to experience the full pipeline from concept to AI-generated model to physical prototype.

Course Content Overview

Day 1 – Fundamentals of 3D Printing and Modeling

  • Session 1 – Introduction to 3D Printing
    • Overview of additive manufacturing technologies, printer components, materials, and typical workflows in modern 3D printing.
  • Session 2 – Print Settings and Slicing Software:
    • Understanding slicer tools and key printing parameters such as layer height, infill, and supports that determine print quality and strength.
  • Session 3 – 3D Modeling Fundamentals
    • Introduction to basic CAD concepts and practical modeling techniques used to design functional 3D printable objects.
  • Session 4 – Hands-on Printing Exercise
    • Participants prepare, slice, and print their first object while learning proper printer setup and operation.

Day 2 – Generative AI and HPC-Enabled Design

  • Session 5 – Generative AI for 3D Model Creation
    • Introduction to AI tools capable of generating 3D models from text, images, or sketches using modern generative models.
  • Session 6 – HPC Support for Generative Design
    • Overview of how GPU-accelerated HPC systems enable training and execution of generative AI models for large-scale 3D model generation and optimization.
  • Session 7 – AI-Driven Design Optimization
    • Exploration of generative design and topology optimization techniques that automatically produce efficient and innovative structures.
  • Session 8 – Final Project: From AI Model to Printed Object
    • Participants generate a 3D model using AI tools, refine it using modeling software, and produce a printable prototype.
